Start with the official essentials

Confirm the date, opening hours and current exhibitions before travelling. A collection museum is still a changing place: rooms, works and activities can vary. Avoid building the entire day around an image you have seen online.

For admission, use MUNCH’s own visitor information. Check eligibility for a concession rather than assuming a student card or age category will be accepted. Allow time for arrival and getting settled; an entry arrangement is not a promise of instant access to a specific artwork.

Arrive at the museum you intended

MUNCH’s address is Edvard Munchs plass 1, 0194 Oslo, in Bjørvika. If you are coming from Oslo Central Station, check your walking route before leaving; construction and weather can change how comfortable a route feels.

The nearby public transport stop is Bjørvika. The museum’s accessibility page gives access and drop-off information. There is no museum parking; do not plan on leaving a car at the entrance.

Norway’s National Museum also shows Munch. A photograph of The Scream does not, by itself, tell you which museum or version it belongs to.

Choose a pace, not a floor count

60–90 min

A focused first encounter

Choose one collection exhibition. Spend time with three or four works, including one you did not already know. Keep a short buffer for arrival and a break.

2–3 hours

A broader look

Combine a collection exhibition with another current exhibition. Pause between them. If you feel saturated, cut a room rather than shortening every encounter.

These are suggestions for time inside the museum, not guaranteed durations. A queue, a conversation or a fascinating room may change the plan. You do not need to see everything to have a worthwhile visit.

04

Make access part of the plan

MUNCH lists step-free access, lifts and seating throughout the museum. Give wheelchair users priority in lifts. Check the official page for dimensions, accessible facilities and companion admission conditions.

If audio description, sign-language provision or a particular type of assistance is essential, ask the museum about availability for your date. A service appearing on a website does not mean every tour is offered every day.

Settle in before you start looking

Keep your phone charged if you plan to use the museum’s audio guide on your own device, and bring headphones. Listen to one entry first: if the guide helps you see more, continue; if it takes your attention away from the work, take a listening break.

MUNCH permits visitor photography without flash in exhibition halls. Follow any room-specific signs and staff instructions. Step aside to take a picture and leave other visitors a clear view.

Before leaving, write down the name of one work you want to revisit. A title and a brief observation are more useful later than a camera roll of labels.
